How technology has disrupted the 5 stages of travel

In the good old days, the need to go on vacation could be triggered by a postcard that was posted to us by a friend, an article or advertisement in the newspaper-magazine, or a friend who had just returned from vacation. Back then we used to read some travel magazines and at the same time  we asked acquaintances and relatives to collect information. Inevitably, we ended up at the travel agency, which acted as a travel guide, to make a reservation.

An essential accessory for vacations was the camera (with tones of film) and, of course, the postcards we sent to friends or kept ourselves to remind us of the holidays. However, today, technology has brought about profound changes. The need to go on vacation can be triggered by a stunning photo on Instagram, a post on Facebook, a video on YouTube or TikTok, a review from a "friend" or an influencer.

Then, TripAdvisor, Booking, and all those websites hosting reviews "take action." Of course, booking is almost always done electronically, either directly from the company's website or through electronic intermediaries.

During holidays, the smartphone (with a high-resolution camera) is an extension of our hand. Posts, photos, and short videos are uploaded to share our presence at the destination, sometimes to make others jealous, and of course, to garner many likes and shares. After the trip, we make sure to reward or punish businesses by posting reviews.
